This is a quick start guide for a first time manager AND a quality refresher for the experienced manager.
- Understand the difference between Leadership vs Management.
- Understand the Management Machine™️
- Inputs - this is the company culture...you must understand your company Culture deeply to be an effective manager
- Processing - this is your team! You must have a charter that outlines: who is your customer, what we do, where we work (channels, memos, tools, etc), when we have rituals, why you should care, how we measure ourselves (metrics, KPIs, etc)
- Outputs - these are the rituals that create legibility for the company (weekly status, WBR, all hands reviews, etc), your team (weekly meeting, daily standup, etc), and the individuals on your team (1o1, performance review, etc)
- GWC-ing the Management Machine™️
- Get it - if you don’t get it, use inversion. What would a bad manager do and then avoid those things at all costs
- Want it - if you don’t want to be a manager no amount of training is going to get you there. Get out of the seat thoughtfully.
